Vanessa Hudgens sees dead people – or at least, she’s felt the presence of them.

The actress says she was visited by an unearthly presence – something she can only explain as a ghost – while filming the upcoming movie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island in North Carolina recently.

“North Wilmington is one of the oldest, most haunted places in North America,” Hudgens, 22, told PEOPLE Saturday while hosting a party at Pure Nightclub in Las Vegas.

The Sucker Punch actress says she heard footsteps in a house, but couldn’t find the source of them. “I was chasing around my ghost for like 10 minutes solid, and then it got way too freaky, and I just left,” she says.

Hudgens – who recently explained the reasons for her split with Zac Efron – admits she was scared by the ghostly encounter but that she tried to figure out the meaning of it.

“I feel like she might have lost a husband at war and she’s waiting for her man to come back to her,” she says. “It was definitely a female spirit. I could tell.”
