Back at work in the studio, Usher is drawing on his personal life for inspiration, calling his upcoming album “romantic at times” but also “racy, risky, edgy.”

“I look at music like a diary so part of its about my personal experiences,” says the Grammy-winning singer. And he’s had plenty of material from which to draw, having recently filed for divorce from his wife of nearly two years.

“I’m doing fine,” he told PEOPLE on Wednesday. “Thank you very much to everyone who’s concerned.”

Though the split marked the end of a troubled marriage, Usher, 30, is all smiles when talking about his babies – 18-month-old Usher Raymond V and 6-month-old Naviyd.

Usher V and Naviyd are “cherubs,” says the proud dad, “but Usher, he’s a little destructive. He broke an assistant’s phone yesterday! He dropped it. … Kids don’t know how valuable a cell phone is. You lose your phone, it’s like you lost everything!”
