The Trident II missile was fired as scheduled from a submarine off the coast of Southern California, as part of an ongoing system evaluation, a Navy spokesman said
On Saturday, what many Californians wondered was a UFO – some jokingly – was in fact the test flight of a missile, the Navy told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The missile was seen in Los Angeles and San Diego early Saturday night, and was also visible in Arizona and Nevada, according to the Union-Tribune.
In video captured that night, the missile can be seen running across the sky, first as a small bit of light before blossoming into a blue streak.
The Trident II missile was fired as scheduled from a submarine off the coast of Southern California, as part of an ongoing system evaluation, a Navy spokesman told the paper.
The missile was not armed, said Cmdr. Ryan Perry with the Navy s Third Fleet.
“Each test activity provides valuable information about our systems, thus contributing to assurance in our capabilities,” he said in a statement.
The Orange County Sheriff said in a tweet that night that it was a Naval test.
