Donald Trump Promises to Put 'America First' in Measured Speech on Foreign Policy
"My foreign policy will always put the interests of the American people and American security first," Donald Trump said Wednesday
Donald Trump outlined his plan for a foreign policy that will put “America first” during a lengthy speech in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday.
Striking a markedly calmer and, some might say, “more presidential” tone than usual, the GOP front-runner promised that if he’s elected, he will restore logic and order to U.S. foreign policy, which he argues is currently a “complete and total disaster” with no vision or strategy.
“My foreign policy will always put the interests of the American people and American security first That will be the foundation of every single decision that I will make,” he said. ” ‘America first’ will be the major and overriding theme of my administration.”
In Trump’s speech, which comes on the heels of his five-state sweep in the Acela Primary, the billionaire businessman identified what he sees as the key problems with U.S. foreign policy: “the nation’s resources are overextended; many of our allies aren’t paying their fair share; our friends fear they can’t depend on us; our rivals no longer respect us; and the country doesn’t have clear foreign policy goals.”
“All of this is going to change when I am president,” he said. “America is going to be strong again. America is going to be a reliable friend and ally again.”
Blasting President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, Trump said the president has “treated Iran with great tender love and care” at the expense of our allies in the region, our “great friend” Israel, and the U.S. itself.
Trump called for America to upgrade its nuclear arsenal and vowed to contain the spread of “radical Islam” and destroy ISIS by becoming more “unpredictable.”
“I have a simple message for ISIS: Their days are numbered,” he said. “I won’t tell them where and I won’t tell them how. We must, as a nation, be strong and resilient. They’re going to be gone.”
“Our foreign policy goals must be based on America’s core national security interests,” Trump concluded. “My goal is to establish a foreign policy that will endure for several generations centered on prioritizing America first. Under a Trump Administration, no American citizen will ever again feel that their needs come second to the citizens of foreign countries.”
