Trevor Moran had a very special message for his fans on Friday.

The 17-year-old YouTube star came out as gay to his followers in a new video.

“So basically – if it’s a shocker to any of you – I’m gay!” Moran said in the video (watch above).

“Whew, that was hard. That was hard to say to the camera, dude,” he added. But the vlogger doesn’t think the news should come as a surprise to his devoted viewers.

“If you’ve been watching me since Apple Store dances up to X Factor up to the “Echo” music video, you probably should know by now, but clarifying it, yes.”

“I don’t feel like I was ever in a closet, I feel like I was in like a glass closet. Like you could f——- see me.”

After the clarification, Moran answered Twitter questions from his legions of fans, covering everything from coming out to his parents to his struggle to self-identify.

“I thought I was bisexual for a long time because I was just so frightened by the word gay,” he said. “I did definitely try to be straight and experiment with girls – it just doesn’t work,” he later added.

The announcement comes on the heels of the release of Moran’s new music video for “I Wanna Fly,” which alludes to his sexuality. The singer talked to PEOPLE about the inspiration behind the song at this summer’s VidCon.

Trevor Moran Reveals His Song "I Wanna Fly" is About His Mom

“Two minutes before the music video was coming out, I had a panic attack. I had a really bad panic attack,” he said. “I was holding on to my mom, and I was like ‘Mom, they’re all going to hate me! They’re going to unfollow, unlike, blocked!'”

But now that he’s out of the “glass closet,” it’s quite the opposite for Moran.

“I feel so open,” he said. “I feel so happy.”
