Travis Barker was just as surprised about his new relationship as anyone else!

The Blink-182 drummer – whose memoir, Can I Say, will be released Tuesday – opened up to PEOPLE about meeting new girlfriend Rita Ora – and how it came “out of nowhere.”

The rocker was performing his new single ”100” at a charity basketball game in L.A. last month when they were introduced.

“My kids are there, I’m seeing people I haven’t seen in a long time, and my buddy goes, ‘Hey, Travis, take a picture with Rita!’ ” Barker, 39, recalls. “And I look over, and there she is. We’d never met, and she’s just, she’s stunning. She’s a sweetheart.”

The pair took a photo, and, “The next thing you know, it’s like, ‘Hey, Rita wanted to reach out. Is it cool to give her your info?’ And I was like, ‘Of course,'” says Barker of meeting the “Body on Me” singer, 24.

“I mean, she’s awesome. She’s one of those great things that happen that you’re like: ‘Whoa, wasn’t expecting that.’ And I just never second-guess it. Just enjoy it.”

Since linking up at that fateful charity event, the couple have taken their relationship public (and Instagram official!), stepping out for a spooky date night Oct. 4 at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights.
