Everybody knows the song.
Toni Basil scored a No. 1 hit in 1982 with “Mickey”. The official video – cheerleaders and all – became a mainstay on MTV during its formative years. If you’re over 35, you can probably sing every word.
“Mickey” turned out to be Basil’s only top 40 hit, but the 72-year-old singer/dancer/actress has obviously not slowed down.
Last July, she showed up at a dance workshop and decided to show off some killer hip hop movies. The video is embedded above.
The clip began to go viral last week, with at least 2 million views on various media platforms. Judging by the comments, people were shocked that she could move so well in her 70s.
As it turns out, they shouldn’t have been surprised. Basil has spent decades as a choreographer for artists such as Tina Turner and Bette Midler. She has also choreographed more than a dozen movies, ranging from American Graffiti to Legally Blonde.
And, according to her official website, she still performs Mickey live.
We’ve included the iconic video of Mickey above, but take no responsibility if you can’t get it out of your head for the rest of the day.
