Little Lucca is learning a lot of early lessons about the Holidays Sads.

The Snowman, for those not in the know, is a fantastically sad children’s book about a benevolent Christmas snowman, much like Frosty, who befriends a small boy and takes him on a magical journey.

But unlike Frosty, who cavils off into the sunset after sowing discord, the titular snowman in this book just dies at the end. Heartwarming.

The animated version of the book was nominated for an Academy Award and has become an annually televised event in the U.K. and elsewhere.

Sarah Mckeown, of Northern Ireland, showed the film to her son Lucca, who predictably got drawn right in. The downside of that involvement, though, is that he was unprepared for the film’s ending – and was somewhat devastated by it.

Buck up, Lucca. The holidays don’t really start getting super-sad until you’re in your 20s, at least.
