Kanye, Donald Trump and J.K. Rowling Make TIME's List of 'The 30 Most Influential People on the Internet'
Quantifying a person’s scope of influence across the whole of the Internet can be a difficult job, but someone’s got to do it.
And TIME is that someone. The magazine has created its second annual list of the most influential individuals on the Internet, and while some of the names aren’t a surprise, there are a few wildcards hidden in the bunch.
Obviously, Kanye made the list. When you can cause the entirety of the Internet to snap to attention with one misplaced Twitter tantrum, you wield some pretty significant power. And Donald Trump, whose own tweet storms over the years have become the stuff of legend, makes the list for his historic shakeup of 2016’s presidential race. Kim Kardashian‘s spot on the list was pretty much a foregone conclusion as well.
But did you know the woman behind the popular blog I F-cking Love Science, Elise Andrew? Or the 87-year-old Helen Van Winkle, whose Instagram account Baddiewinkle has accrued 1.8 million followers, Miley Cyrus and Nicole Richie among them? That’s the beauty of the Internet: It’s one of the only places where an 87-year-old widow from Kentucky can rub shoulders with the world’s most popular rapper and a presidential candidate.
