Tiger Enraged by 'Satire' of His Wife

Woods may sue an Irish magazine that implied Elin Nordegren posed nude

Tiger Woods said Wednesday he was outraged that an Irish magazine and tabloid linked photos of his wife, Elin Nordegren, to pornographic Web sites, and his agent is debating whether to sue, the Associated Press reports.

“My wife, yes, she has been a model prior, and she did do some bikini photos,” Woods, in Ireland to play for the Ryder Cup, which starts Friday, said at a news conference. “But to link her to porn Web sites and such is unacceptable, and I do not accept that at all. Neither does our team.”

The Dubliner magazine wrote in its September issue, “Most American golfers are married to women who cannot keep their clothes on in public. Is it too much to ask that they leave them at home for the Ryder Cup? Consider the evidence. Tiger Woods’s wife can be found in a variety of sweaty poses on porn sites.”

The magazine’s publisher, Dubliner Media Limited, has apologized, claiming it was a satire and not to be taken seriously.

The Irish Daily Star tabloid splashed the story across its front page Wednesday under the headline, “Tiger’s Fury at Naked Pictures.” Inside were photos of Nordegren in a bikini as well as a nude shot of a woman that was purported to be Nordegren when it came out three years ago (Woods denied the picture was of his wife).

Woods’s agent, Mark Steinberg, tells the AP he’s considering a lawsuit. “I can’t say much now because of prejudice, because I’m not sure what we’ll do in the future,” he said. “Everyone knew (the nude photo) wasn’t her. It’s plain as day. You can see it’s not factual. It’s kind of ironic they bring it up this week.”

Woods, who called a press conference Wednesday, a day ahead of schedule, to voice his displeasure over the stories, said he didn’t blame the Irish people for the jibe.

“I know the media can be a little bit difficult at times, but when you … it’s hard to be very diplomatic about this when you have so much emotion involved, when my wife is involved in this,” Woods said.

“You do things for the people you love and you care about,” he continued. “My father got ridiculed for years, and I always felt for my father and my mother the same way. My wife, we’re in it together. We’re a team, and we do things as a team. And I care about her with all my heart.”
