Usually people tip their caps to Tiger Woods. But when the world’s No. 1 golf champ tipped his at Thursday’s opening of the President’s Cup in Virginia, several of those watched in stunned amazement.

“Look at the hair!” was the general comment among those in the crowd at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club – a crowd that happened to include former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Woods revealed patterned, leopard-like blonde spots on his head, reports The Washington Post, which featured a hair-raising shot of the back of Woods’s patchy head as well as a photo of his wife, Elin, planting a smooch on his cheek after he lost a match.

The paper noted that the new ‘do didn’t quite gel with his dressy sports coat, pants and tie, and that the spots were already in place on Tuesday, but the golfer refused to remove his cap for photographers then.

As for Woods’s game, he could face off against two opponents by himself on Friday after his President’s Cup partner, Jim Furyk, pulled a muscle in his rib cage. (Woods and Furyk had been paired to play against Stuart Appleby and Mark Hensby on Thursday.)

“If there’s one man in the world who could play two men, it would be Tiger,” International captain Gary Player tells USA Today.
