Turns out, the hard-bodied Sexiest Dad Alive has a soft side.

Protective pop Channing Tatum says fatherhood’s given him a whole new perspective on life.

“You see how dangerous everything is!” the actor, 34, told PEOPLE at Saturday’s Hollywood Foreign Press Association & InStyle‘s annual Toronto International Film Festival party.

“You go, ‘Oh, yeah, she could hit her head on that. She could hit her head on that. That’s an uneven carpet right there – she’s going down,’ ” says Tatum, who, with wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum, plays real-life parent to daughter Everly, 15 months. “My [idea of] mortality’s set in a little bit.”

The star – who’s filming Magic Mike XXL – is at the Toronto fest to promote his new drama costarring Mark Ruffalo and Steve Carell, Foxcatcher, which is already picking up some award-season buzz.

“It’s super rare to just make a good movie, much less be talked about in those ways,” he says. “This one is really dear and special.”

As for whom the Sexiest Man Alive alumnus would like to see take the title next, Tatum already has his pick in place: “Jonah,” he says, referring to his pal and 22 Jump Street costar. “Jonah Hill should be the Sexiest Man.”

As for why: “Because!” insists Tatum. “He’s sexy!”
