This Is Us Star Chrissy Metz on Romance: 'If You're Secure and Happy, Wonderful People Come into Your Life'
Metz, 36, has hit her professional stride recently thanks to her honest, nuanced portrayal of Kate Pearson, who has charmed audiences in part thanks to her budding on-screen relationship with jocular fellow Overeaters Anonymous member Toby (Chris Sullivan).
And while Metz has hit a professional high thanks to her breakout gig on the NBC tearjerker, she’s never lacked self-assurance in her personal life.
“No matter what size I’ve been, I’ve never had issues dating,” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “I’ve found really wonderful men, and I do believe that like attracts like. It’s one of those things where if you’re secure and you’re happy mostly, you find really wonderful people who come into your life.”
The actress confirms that she is dating someone right now, though she is most likely going to be keep it “a private thing. I’m excited to go to red carpets, but I think we’re just going to see what happens. We’re figuring it out.”

Even as Metz has garnered lots of attention — especially from women and men who’ve been inspired by her body-positive message — she notes that her current romance didn’t stem from any notoriety she’s gained in the last few months.
“It wasn’t like they came out of the woodworks just because I’m on the show,” she says. “It was just organic, and I’m grateful for that because I know it’s difficult to be dating and in the spotlight and having things change.”
Even before going on a “spiritual journey” to silence her critics and find her center as an actress, Metz says she was happy regardless of whether she was coupled or single in her downtime. “I never felt like I needed a boyfriend,” she says. “I have great friends and I have a great social life. I think when you have that air that you’re not desperate, the right things will come into your life at the right times.”
