During the vacation, President Obama will ring in his final year as president.

On their way to Hawaii, the Obamas made a pit stop in San Bernardino, California, to meet with the families of the victims who died in the mass shooting, as well as first responders.

The president and First Lady spent nearly three hours hearing from the victim’s loved ones on Friday, describing the meetings as “moving.”

“You had people form every background, every faith,” Obama said. “Some described loved ones who had come to this country as immigrants, others who had lived in the area all their lives, all of them extraordinarily proud of the work they were doing to keep people healthy and safe.”
