ARRIVAL TO THE CAPITOL

After a long journey, Katniss and Peeta arrive at the Emerald City-like Capitol, and they're awestruck by its grandeur – and odd citizens, who dye their skin, have recreational plastic surgery and look to "have never missed a meal."

KATNISS'S GLAM MAKEOVER

"We don't have much cause to look nice in District 12," Katniss says as she's getting a complete Capitol-worthy makeover by her prep team. "It's hard to hate my prep team. They're such total idiots," she thinks.

THE FITNESS TEST

All the tributes are judged in a private session with the Gamemakers – who ignore Katniss when she appears before them to instead focus on a roasted pig. "I'm being upstaged by a dead pig," Katniss fumes, before shooting an arrow at the apple in the pig's mouth, pinning it to the wall and terrifying the Gamemakers.

THEIR GRAND ENTRANCE

THE CORNUCOPIA

Credit: Murray Close/Lionsgate

The first thing Katniss sees when she lands in the arena is the Cornucopia, described as a "giant golden horn shaped like a cone with a curved tail." It's filled with helpful items – weapons, food and equipment, luring the tributes into a bloody battle for the spoils.

THE TRACKER JACKER ATTACK

Katniss's first casualties die at the hand of the tracker jackers, government-mutated wasps, armed with venom "carefully created to target the place where fear lives in your brain." While hiding in a tree, she drops a nest on the tributes – but is stung herself, forcing her to suffer violent hallucinations.

KATNISS'S FINAL SCENE WITH RUE

Katniss begins her rebellion against the Capitol when Rue is killed, decorating her dead body with flowers and using the District 12 salute to "show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can't own."

THE MUTTATIONS

In the final brutal surprise in the 74th Hunger Games, the Gamemakers release mutated versions of the fallen tributes, which attack Peeta, Katniss and District 2 tribute Cato. The wolf-like beasts have claws that are "four inches and clearly razor-sharp" and eyes that are "unmistakably human."
