A 17-year-old boy from Carson, California, fatally shot himself in the head just after midnight on Monday during a game of Russian roulette with other teens, The Los Angeles Times reports.

The game is played by loading a revolver with a lone bullet, spinning the cylinder and then aiming the gun at one’s temple before pulling the trigger.

According to the paper, authorities say that the teenager, who was living with his older brother and the brother’s wife, pulled out a .38 Special revolver and said he was going to play the game in his bedroom.

He held the gun to his head and shot himself after his cousins pleaded for him “not to do it,” Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez told the Times.

He was then rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Associated Press.

Authorities have reportedly ruled the death as accidental, and no charges are expected.
