A 16-year-old girl came loose from a swing ride on Monday, plunging more than 100 feet to her death.
Olivia Paige Grimes, the daughter of a Florida pastor, was riding the “Freebird” swing ride at Carolina Point Camp, which is run by the Christian youth organization Young Life, when she slipped out, officials said Tuesday.
“We’ve had a tragic accident involving one of our campers,” camp manager Greg Carlton said in a statement. “A high school-age camper somehow became detached and fell off of a swing. Camp staff called emergency medical assistance immediately and began administering CPR.”
But it was too late. Olivia was pronounced dead at the scene, WYFF4 reports.
Authorities have not determined precisely how the teen became detached, but are actively investigating. Olivia was strapped into the swing along with two other participants who remained secured by the body harness that holds riders in place.
Police are calling the death an accident.
The Freebird is just one of several rides at the camp, which also includes a zip-line course. In the ride, participants are strapped into a swing and hoisted up the 120-ft. frame, then released to swing back and forth.
The ride is closed while police investigate.
