Taylor Swift is still up in the air about marriage and family.

“I don’t know if I’ll have kids,” she tells InStyle in its November issue. (Swift graces PEOPLE’s 40th anniversary cover story this week.) “It’s impossible not to picture certain scenarios and how you would try to convince them that they have a normal life when, inevitably, there will be strange men pointing giant cameras at them from the time they are babies.”

And Swift, 24, says that it’s not just kids – marriage is also a long way off.

“I’m too young to get married,” she says. “Not agewise, but I know myself, so why try to meet someone right now when I know I’m too young to do something serious?”

Right now, the singer says her friends are her top priority. Her inner circle, which includes Lena Dunham, Lorde and Jaime King, is “the most important thing to me right now,” Swift tells PEOPLE.

“Being on my own, prioritizing my girlfriends, my family and my music above everything else and trying things I never thought I’d try,” Swift says. “It’s really been a liberating and freeing time.”

Her upcoming album, 1989, drops Oct. 27, but you can pre-order it now here.
