Rosie O’Donnell and Tatum O’Neal are an item, a source says.

“They are together in [West] Palm Beach,” the source tells PEOPLE. “They are seeing each other and they have gotten stronger ever since Chelsea ran away and [O’Donnell’s] father died.

However, a rep for O’Donnell, 53, previously told PEOPLE that the two are just friends.

“No, they’ve been friends for several years since they met in Chicago when Rosie did a show for OWN and Tatum did a docu-series for OWN.” The rep echoed the statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday, saying, “they are friends and nothing more.”

On Tuesday, O’Neal – who revealed exclusively to PEOPLE in May that she now dates women – posted a cryptic tweet that has since been removed: “#vacations my wife and I woo woo!!! #Ilovemylife.”

The tweet linked to a now-removed Instagram photo of a palm tree with a caption featuring both a heart and two women emojis.

When a Twitter user asked O’Neal, 51, if she had gotten “hitched,” she replied that “no it was a joke.”

A source told PEOPLE earlier this month that O’Donnell and O’Neal are “romantically involved,” and in a “bicoastal relationship” (the source added that the two have seen each other in Los Angeles and Nyack, New York). And in July, O’Donnell purchased a more than 7,000-sq.-ft. home in West Palm Beach on the Intracoastal Waterway for $5.27 million.

“Rosie bought the house right away because she said she felt comfortable in it,” Steve Davis, Director of Luxury Sales for Douglas Elliman Palm Beach, tells PEOPLE.

The new relationship comes at a difficult time for O’Donnell who recently filed for divorce from Michelle Rounds, lost her father, Edward O’Donnell and her daughter Chelsea moved out after going missing last month.
