Sentimental Stars Who Got Tattoos in Honor of Their TV and Movie Roles
These actors have permanent reminders of their most meaningful work
The Avengers Cast
"We have an Avengers tattoo," Scarlett Johansson told Seth Meyers during a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. "The only person who doesn't have it is Mark Ruffalo, because he's lame, basically. We tried to get him to do it. We said, 'What about if we do it in white ink? ... If we did it in water?' He just shut it down," she joked of her costar.
The Avengers Cast, Pt. 2
Robert Downey Jr. showed off his ink on Instagram, revealing to Entertainment Weekly that the group got inked back in 2018 and revealing that while Ruffalo may have skipped out, their tattoo artist opted in. "And the sixth was the tattoo artist, who gave it to five of us, the one who opted out being Mark Ruffalo."
"It was [Scarlett] Johansson's idea, and she and [Chris] Evans did it in New York," he added. "Then their New York guy, Josh Lord, who is amazing, flew out to LA, he did me, did [Jeremy] Renner, and then we just bullied [Chris] Hemsworth into doing it, and he got it. And each one of us drew a line on the artist with his own tattoo gun and it was a total massacre. Each of us contributed to giving the tattoo artist the sixth tattoo that he designed for us."
Kaley Cuoco & Zosia Mamet
The two actresses - who starred in HBO Max's The Flight Attendant together - shared photos on Instagram getting matching tattoos.
"A special little tribute to our wonderful little show .. ✈️ " Cuoco wrote in the caption for a series of photos. The duo received a line tattoo of a paper plane with a trail, a nod to the drama's title.
In one snapshot, she and Mamet smile as New York tattoo artist Evan Kim bends over the Girls star's ankle.
In an Instagram post of her own, Mamet wrote, "after a full year and many adventures together we decided to get a little memento. Thank you @evantattoo 💛#theflightattendant ✈️✨"
Gaga's latest body art celebrates her Oscar-nominated role in A Star Is Born. "Happy Valentine's Day. A tattoo toast to 'la vie en rose' by the beautiful @winterstone my spinal cord is now a rose," the singer/actress captioned a photo of her new back tattoo. Her character Ally performs the classic Édith Piaf song "La Vie en Rose" during a critical scene in the musical-drama.
The star added a flame to her finger tattoos in a nod to her X-Men character, Jean Grey, who is known by the aliases Phoenix and Dark Phoenix. Turner played the superhero in X-Men: Apocalypse, as well as 2019's Dark Phoenix, the franchise's first Grey-centric movie.
After wrapping the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, Clarke got three magical creatures tattooed on her wrist to honor her character, Daenerys Targaryen, a.k.a. the Mother of Dragons. "MOD 4 LYFE!!!!🔥@_dr_woo_ made sure this mamma ain't NEVER forgetting her babies.... 😍 #dontworryionlybrieflypassedout
#withfyreandinkbaby #modgothookedupp #couldntbehappierifitried #🙌 #🔥 #❤️," she captioned a photo of her ink.
MAISIE WILLIAMS & SOPHIE TURNER
The Game of Thrones costars and longtime besties got matching peach-colored tattoos that read "07.08.09.", the fateful date that they were both cast on the show. "With Thrones, we were always planning since season one, if we make it all the way through we can get like a matching wolf or something," Turner explained to E! News. "We don't know if we're going to make it, so Maisie and I were like 'let's get these ones before somebody kills us or something.'" The pair's U.K.-based tattoo artist Miss Kat Paine shared a pic of the actresses in her ink studio.
The duo each has their own individual pieces in honor of GOT as well. Turner has House Stark's direwolf sigil and "the pack survives," words from the family maxim, on her arm. Meanwhile, her on-screen little sister honored Arya Stark with a "No One" tattoo on her upper back.
AMANDA SEYFRIED, ASHLEY LILLEY & RACHEL MCDOWALL
Seyfried and her Mamma Mia! costars got the word "minge" tattooed on their feet to commemorate their friendship and the film, but the artwork doesn't quite translate well when the actress goes overseas. "In England, it means vagina. But in the U.S., which is where I spend most of my time, it just doesn't mean anything," she explained of "minge" on Late Night with Seth Meyers. "So we commemorated our friendship with 'minge' tattoos."
THE CAST OF 13 REASONS WHY
NEIL PATRICK HARRIS
In celebration of his Netflix show A Series of Unfortunate Events getting renewed for a second season, Harris adorned his ankle with the Volunteer Fire Department (V.F.D.) insignia from the series. "We got picked up for Season 2 of A Series of Unfortunate Events. I got this to celebrate. #firsttattoo #anklebone #oof #olaf #scampstamp," he captioned the tat reveal on Instagram.
THE PRETTY LITTLE LIARS CAST
After wrapping the show's seven-year run, stars Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, Lucy Hale, Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse had a tattoo artist inscribe their characters' first initials on their pointer fingers. "We couldn't not get tattoos to commemorate the show! And obviously on our 'shh' finger," Hale captioned a close-up shot of the group's matching ink.
Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul both got tattoos in honor of their hit show Breaking Bad. Paul has "No Half Measures," a nod to a quote from the show, tattooed on his inner bicep.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS CAST
The close-knit cast of the series of fantasy films have "nine" written in J.R.R. Tolkien's Elvish Tengwar script tattoed on various places on their bodies. Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Sean Astin, and Sean Bean all got the fellowship memorablia together (which can be seen here in a virtual reunion on Josh Gad's YouTube series Reunited Apart). "It was one of those beautiful moments, where we all felt like we had been through this war, this battle, together in a lot of different ways," Monaghan told Entertainment Weekly about getting inked in New Zealand with his fellow actors. "That really brought together that family feeling."
THE MAD MAX: FURY ROAD CAST
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Zoë Kravitz, Courtney Eaton and Riley Keough, who played the wives of dystopian tyrant Immortan Joe in the film, got matching ink to commemorate their work on the film. "We all got the same tattoo - three little dots and a triangle," Eaton told Vanity Fair.
THE SUICIDE SQUAD CAST
Actors Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne and Will Smith took turns wielding the tattoo guns as the cast and crew of the DC flick got matching "SKWAD" tatttoos. While Robbie seemed to do an impeccable job with director David Ayer's ink, she later 'fessed up to botching a cast assistant's tat on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. "Everyone was spelling it as S-K-W-A-D, but I went straight from the 'S' to the 'W,'" she admitted.
