Of all the new faces in the new Star Warstrailers, perhaps none are as cute as BB-8, the roly-poly droid seen scooting along what’s probably Tattooine in the trailer.

BB-8 made a live debut at the Star Wars Celebration convention in Anaheim last week, and toy maker Sphero announced that it will be partnering with Disney to offer an official licensed toy version of the adorable robot.

But one Star Wars fan, industrial designer Christian Poulsen, beat them to the punch. Using a Sphero, “polyurethane foam, magnets and spray paint,” Poulsen created his own BB-8, and he has provided instructions on his website on how fans can do the same. (He calls it a “quick, one-day process,” obviously underestimating our ability to complicate even the simplest mechanical process.)

Whether Disney will allow Poulsen’s unauthorized design to live online forever remains to be seen, but in the meantime, we’re sure it’ll bring joy to mechanically inclined Star Wars fans of all ages and strike terror in any pet that might happen to share their households.
