Spring Beauty Do's & Don'ts
TREND: DRAMATIC LASHES
DO: Opt for sheer shadow and let your lashes – whether false, curled or mascara-heavy – "make the impact" (as seen on Lindsay Lohan and Eva Longoria), says PEOPLE beauty editor Eleni Gage.
DON'T: Pair the look with dark lipstick; keep the rest of your makeup simple.
TREND: GOLDEN GLOW
DO: Prep your skin with a luminous powder, foundation or moisturizer for an "all-over subtle glow on your face" (as seen on Jessica Alba and Ashley Olsen), and stick to sheer lip color and golden eye shadow, says Gage.
DON'T: Choose fake bronzer – you'll end up looking too tan.
TREND: SOPHISTICATED PONYTAIL
DO: Go fuss-free (like Keira Knightley and Sheryl Crow), but for a finishing touch, "wrap your hair around the elastic to cover it," says Gage.
DON'T: Use it as an excuse to be lazy – pull your tresses back carefully.
TREND: CANDY-PINK LIPS
DO: Swap your dark winter lip color for a vibrant pink in a sheer wash (modeled by Eva Mendes and Kate Beckinsale). "It's the quickest way to update your look for spring," says Gage.
DON'T: Use lip liner. "You want to steer clear of having a line around the glossy pinkness."
TREND: GOLD EYE SHADOW
DO: Use metallic shades (worn by Mischa Barton and Beyoncé Knowles) instead of black eyeliner. "They're flattering without being dramatic and harsh," says Gage.
DON'T: Wear anything else shimmery on your face, otherwise, "you're going to look like a disco queen."
TREND: MESSY UPDOS
DO: Keep hair soft and natural when pinning it up (as seen on Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz). "It's a prettier version of how you throw your hair up at the office," says Gage.
DON'T: Slick back your hair. "This isn't a season to try to get that ballerina bun."
TREND: GLOSSY, SHEER LIPS
DO: Highlight the natural color of your lips with a sheer gloss (as seen on Halle Berry and Hilary Swank) that has a slight beige or bronze pigment. "It works with almost any eye makeup," says Gage.
DON'T: Erase your lips with matte, nude lipstick – you want your own lip color to shine through.
TREND: PASTEL GREEN EYE SHADOW
DO: Cover your lids or line your eyes with a sheer pastel for a "clean, fresh look" (worn by Scarlett Johansson and Nia Long), says Gage.
DON'T: Wear your favorite forest or hunter green shadow from the holiday season – it'll look too heavy.
TREND: FLUSHED CHEEKS
DO: Wear a blush that's close to the color of your cheeks when you're flushed (as seen on Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Biel). "You want to look like you were having a brisk walk through the park," says Gage.
DON'T: Dive into the bronzer "to attempt to speed along summer." You want to have a healthy, pink glow.
TREND: TOUSLED HAIR
DO: Blow-dry your hair with a diffuser, braid it when it's wet or use a volumizing product to achieve the style (as seen on Naomi Watts and Teri Hatcher). But be sure to wear polished makeup "so that you look sexy, not sloppy," says Gage.
DON'T: Go for ringlets or defined curls. "This is a more relaxed and natural look."
