George Abraham Thampy, 12, of Maryland Heights, Mo., won the $10,000 grand prize in the 2000 Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee on Thursday. His final answer: the correct spelling of “demarche,” which means a step or maneuver. (Among the other words he got right: “vesicant,” “emmetropia,” “annelid,” “psilosis” and “ditokous.”) George, who is home-schooled and plans to give the money to his parents, said on Friday’s “Today” show, “If you want to win something, you have to work hard for it.”
