Two months after a car accident left Sofia Vergara’s boyfriend with a broken leg and fractured pelvis, Nick Loeb is back up on his feet.

“He’s so much better,” the Modern Family star told PEOPLE at last week’s Freedom Bay St. Lucia’s Lingerie New York. “He’s starting to walk on crutches … finally.”

And is the hunky Loeb’s physical strength a factor in his speedy recovery? “Yeah, yeah, of course,” said Vergara, 38. “If not, it would have taken another person a lot more time. He’s very strong.”

At the Cipriani 42nd Street event, Vergara emceed a lingerie show benefiting the Seven Bar Foundation, which supports Microfinance for women around the globe. “It’s fantastic,” said Vergara. “It’s a cause that’s very close to my heart, because as a woman, as a single mother, sometimes … all you need is somebody to lend you a hand [and] believe in you, so you’re able to make a better life for yourself and others in your family.”

While happy to host the lingerie show, there was one role Vergara was relieved not to play: “Thank God it’s not me in the G-string,” she admitted with a laugh.
