The World Cup isn’t the only story in soccer lately: Olympic soccer star Brandi Chastain and her husband, Jerry Smith, have welcomed their first child, a son.
Jaden Chastain Smith was born on June 8 in Santa Clara, Calif., PEOPLE reports in its upcoming issue.
Chastain, 37, and Smith, 45, met when she was a student at Santa Clara (Calif.) University, where Smith has been the coach of the women’s soccer team since 1987. The couple wed in 1996.
Chastain, who was named one of PEOPLE’s 25 Most Intriguing People of 1999, memorably stripped off her jersey after her game-winning penalty kick during 1999 Women’s World Cup final.
Of the headline-making moment, Chastain told PEOPLE at the time, “To me it symbolized shedding the weight of the whole tournament. Just letting go and taking a big sigh of relief and saying, ‘We did it! We won!’ ”
And Smith didn’t seem to mind his wife’s spontaneous strip-down: “She lives life on the edge and does whatever she does with passion,” he said at the time.
Chastain and Smith live in Santa Clara with Smith’s 16-year-old son, Cameron.
