Movie director Michael Ritchie, 62, who had his share of hits (“Smile,” “Downhill Racer”) and misses (“The Island,” “The Golden Child”), died of prostate cancer on Monday, reports The New York Times. Among his unconventional features was the 1993 HBO movie “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom,” starring Holly Hunter. His final film was last year’s “The Fantasticks.”
