Mike Smith, the lead singer of The Dave Clark Five, has died at age 64.

He passed away just weeks before the band – part of the 1960s British Invasion alongside The Beatles and Rolling Stones – was scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. (Fellow inductees in the March 10 ceremony include Madonnaand John Mellencamp.)

The Dave Clark Five scored hits with “I Like it Like That” and “Glad All Over,” and set a record among British acts after appearing on The Ed Sullivan show 13 times.

Smith died from pneumonia at the U.K.’s Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire, said rep Margo Lewis – the result of complications from a 2003 spinal cord injury which left him paralyzed from the waist down.

“I am glad that he will be remembered as a ‘Hall of Famer,’ ” Lewis added, “because he was in so many ways.”
