Sinead's Religious Act
Mother Bernadette Mary, better known as Sinead O’Connor, has withdrawn a $200,000 contribution to the bishop who ordained her as a priest in a dissident Roman Catholic group. The donation to Bishop Michael Cox had caused a rift in the Latin Tridentine church, with Bishop Pat Buckley saying it smacked of simony, or buying a sacred thing. “Bishop Cox and I know that the donation had nothing to do with my ordination, but I am taking it back for protective reasons,” the singer said in Thursday’s Irish Times. She had said the money was intended to fund a healing center in Ireland. Cox (who ordained O’Connor on April 22 in Lourdes) said he supported her decision.
