Shoving, Stabbing at Vibe Awards
One man is injured during a scuffle as Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones stand on stage
There were bad vibes at Monday night’s Vibe Awards, as a stabbing took place in the crowd while Snoop Dogg and Quincy Jones were on stage preparing to honor Dr. Dre, authorities and witnesses say.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m., as the show was winding down and dozens of people were sitting near the stage inside a hangar at the Santa Monica Municipal Airport. A news video shows chairs being tossed, fists flying and people in pursuit of each other while others are restrained.
It was unclear if the stabbing preceded or followed the fight. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was taken to a hospital and was listed in stable condition. No arrests were made.
The show was stopped for more than 45 minutes, though Dr. Dre, who was scheduled to receive a Vibe Legend Award, did return to the stage to accept his honor shortly after the crowd calmed down.
Witnesses say that Dr. Dre, rapper 50 Cent and members of his entourage got involved in the tussle.
Witness Frank Williams told local L.A. station KCAL-TV, “I saw Dr. Dre fighting somebody. I don’t know if he was fighting back. But there was a guy taken out basically bloodied.”
Meanwhile, many of the 1,000 people in the crowd were said to storm the exits once the scuffle broke out.
“My understanding is that it was somewhat chaotic in there,” police Lt. Frank Fabrega said in a press conference following the fight.
Andrea Ferguson, a publicist for the ceremony, called the incident a “disruption” but declined to provide details. The after-party at the Viceroy Hotel was cancelled.
Suge Knight told reporters: “It’s really important that we don’t take a negative incident like this and do away with the awards.”
Knight, who was released from prison in 2001 after serving a five-year prison term for assault and weapons violations, has a history of conflict with Dr. Dre. But he told reporters he has changed his ways and was not at the awards show to cause trouble.
“Things I used to do five years ago, 10 years ago, I don’t do now. I’m not 12 years old anymore. I paid my debt to society, and now it’s about raising my family and making hit records.”
