Shawn Mendes Responds to Justin Bieber's Comment About Not Knowing Him: 'We'll Have to Let Him Know'

Mendes has confirmed they've never come face to face

They’re both Canadian singers who achieved heartthrob status.

As it turns out, though, Justin Bieber, 21, doesn’t know about Shawn Mendes, 17, the "Stitches" vocalist opening for Taylor Swift on her 1989 tour.

“Who’s Shawn Mendes?” Bieber asked after the singer’s name came up during an interview with New York’s 95.5 PLJ on Tuesday.

Host Ralphie Aversa laughed and gave Bieber a quick briefing, explaining how Mendes is “doing OK at pop radio.”

“Nice, nice. Good for him,” Bieber replied, suggesting that he genuinely was not familiar with Mendes.

“Oh, so you don’t even. Oh, wow,” Aversa responded. “I thought for sure you might, because he’s also from southern Ontario.”

“No, I don’t know him, but I will check him out, for sure,” said Bieber.

Although the guys have been at the same place at the same time – they could have easily bumped into each other during Bieber’s big night at the MTV VMAs in August – Mendes has confirmed they’ve never come face to face.

“We haven’t met, but I guess he just doesn’t know,” Mendes said in an interview with BBC Radio 1 on Wednesday.

He added, “I’m definitely a fan of him. I looked up to him for awhile, but I guess he just doesn’t know who I am. We’ll have to let him know.”

Looks like Bieber figured it out himself: On Thursday, he posted a screenshot of Mendes’ hit playing, captioning it, “Shawn I checked out the music and I’m so proud! So glad to see another boy from Canada crushin it. #canadiansdoitbetter”
