Inside Sharon & Ozzy Osbourne's Rocky 35-Year-Long Love Story
SHARON & OZZY MEET
When the pair met in 1971, Sharon was working as a receptionist for her father, music executive Don Arden, who had just signed Ozzy's band Black Sabbath. "Ozzy walked into my father's office without shoes, with a water faucet dangling from his neck and sat on the floor," she told PEOPLE back in 1989 of her first impression of the Prince of Darkness. "I was terrified."
SHARON & OZZY GET MARRIED
Shortly after the rocker's decision to pursue a solo career, Sharon took on the role of his manager. It wasn't too long after that the couple got hitched in a Hawaiian ceremony in 1982. "She was always a very classy woman, smart and outgoing," Ozzy previously told PEOPLE. "I came from a totally different background, not as wealthy or educated, and I thought she was an impressive woman. Then one thing led to another, and I fell in love with her."
DO OPPOSITES REALLY ATTRACT?
"Ozzy's a lunatic and Sharon isn't. That chemistry, I think, is responsible for how far they've gotten," Lita Ford, who collaborated with Ozzy on the hit duet "Close My Eyes Forever," told PEOPLE of the pair's dynamic. But Sharon has previously stated the difficulty that stems for those differences. "One day he can be loving and romantic, but the next day he'll turn into this Jekyll and Hyde monster," she candidly shared. "I never know what I'm going to wake up with."
OZZY BATTLES SUBSTANCE ADDICTION
It's no secret that the legendary performer had battled an addiction to drugs and alcohol since before getting together with wife Sharon. The intensity of his substance abuse became clear in 1989 when he tried strangling Sharon after having drunk three bottles of vodka. "I love Ozzy and deeply respect him for everything that's he has done," she shrugs, when asked about the incident.
THE OSBOURNES STAR IN THEIR OWN REALITY SHOW
From 2002 to 2005, Sharon and Ozzy, along with their two kids Kelly and Jack (their eldest daughter, Aimee, did not want to participate), starred on MTV's The Osbournes – their own reality TV show that documented the lives of the offbeat family.
SHARON IS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER
While filming The Osbournes, the family's matriarch was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2002. Sharon chose to continue filming while battling her cancer diagnosis – a move that was deemed brave by fans – and received support from her husband, Ozzy. "He slept in a chair by the side of my bed for 18 months," she told The Telegraph in 2010. "He was scared that if he closed his eyes for a moment, I would be dead when he opened them. He would carry me to the bathroom when I wet myself because of the medication, then shower me and put me back to bed. When my hair was falling out he would pick it out of my food: there was no disgust there, because he loves me unconditionally, just as I do him."
OZZY SHUTS DOWN DIVORCE RUMORS
The former Black Sabbath frontman's struggle with sobriety became the central issue in the pair's rocky relationship, fueling divorce rumors in 2013, which Ozzy addressed in a Facebook post that same year. "For the last year and a half I have been drinking and taking drugs," he writes. "I was in a very dark place and was an asshole to the people I love most, my family. However, I am happy to say that I am now 44 days sober. Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing. I'm just trying to be a better person."
SHARON RECALLS HARMING HERSELF TO PROVE HER LOVE FOR OZZY
The Talk cohost revealed during the show's "Secret Week" that she once cut her wrist in an effort to "prove" her love for Ozzy back when they were dating. "When we first got together, we would drink a lot together. That's what we did. We had a session of romance, drinking, partying – it's about 4 a.m. and he says to me, 'How much do you love me? I don't know if this relationship is going to last.'" Sharon decided to show her devotion for the rocker by taking a steak knife to her wrist. "Unfortunately for me, I kind of went too deep and it wouldn't stop bleeding," she said. "I got very sober, very quickly."
SHARON & OZZY SPLIT
After 33 years of marriage, Sharon and Ozzy mutually decide to split in May 2016. Although Ozzy's substance issues were not the cause of the relationship's demise (the rocker maintains he is three years sober), a source close to the pair told PEOPLE Sharon believes Ozzy is having an affair. The damage is not entirely irreparable, however, according to the source who is sure "[Ozzy will] be back" after the rocker moved out of the couple's home.
SHARON & OZZY ARE SPOTTED TOGETHER
Two months after announcing their split, the separated couple was spotted together in L.A. "They're happy hanging out together," a friend of the pair tells PEOPLE. Just a few weeks earlier, daughter Kelly Osbourne revealed to The Insider that despite calling it quits after infidelity rumors began to surface, her parents were still very much together. "I will never not be good with my dad," she added. "That does not mean that I think what he did wasn't f---ing stupid, but that's between him and I. I'm a daddy's girl. I love my dad."
SHARON & OZZY GIVE THEIR MARRIAGE ANOTHER SHOT
The U.K. X Factor judge took to The Talk to address her relationship status, putting an end to weeks of speculation that she and her estranged husband had reconciled. "I forgive," she says before the studio audience. "It's going take a long time to trust, but we've been together 36 years, 34 of marriage ... I just can't think of my life without him." With that, she returned to a little levity, calling Ozzy "a dirty dog" and saying, "He's gonna pay big."
OZZY REVEALS HE HAS A SEX ADDICTION
After Ozzy got back together with wife Sharon, a rep for the 67-year-old rocker opened up to PEOPLE about Ozzy's six-year-long sex addiction, which he is said to be treating with "intense therapy." "Ozzy is mortified at what his behavior has done to his family," continues the rep. "He thanks God that his incredible wife Sharon is at his side to support him." One of the Black Sabbath frontman's mistresses, Michelle Pugh, revealed to PEOPLE she had a four-year affair with Ozzy, saying "he gave me the greatest love of my life."
Almost two months before their 35th anniversary on July 4, Sharon and Ozzy renewed their wedding vows in Las Vegas on Mother's Day. "For me, this was actually our real wedding day," Ozzy told HELLO! Magazine about the intimate 2017 ceremony. "This is the one that I will remember. Sharon and I have been through so much, and this honestly feels like a new beginning."
The couple reached the 35-year mark in their marriage on July 4 and Sharon commemorated the occasion with a heartfelt tribute (along with an awesome photo) on Twitter. "Thank you Ozzy for 35 crazy & wonderful years," she wrote. "You carry my heart in yours, and it's getting older and needs protecting. Happy Anniveversary. [sic]"
