Sharks Avoid Leo

Leonardo DiCaprio and his current co-star Tilda Swinton were riding in a long tail boat — a traditional fishing canoe with an outboard motor — when it went down Friday in heavy seas off Thailand during a sudden storm while the two were filming “The Beach.” But contrary to front-page reports in some Thai papers, no sharks were seen near the boat, said Santa Pestanij, the Thai coordinator for the 20th Century Fox film who was present when the boat capsized. Dive operators contacted by the Associated Press said small sand sharks may sometimes swim near the islands, but they had never heard of a shark attack in the area.

  • The studio representative said DiCaprio remained calm for the five to ten minutes he was in the water and helped soothe crew members who were afraid of drowning. “He was a real gentleman,” said Santa. “A hero.”
