Most YouTube fans know Shane Dawson best when he’s in costume, doing impressions or channeling one of his many goofy characters. But on Tuesday, he skipped the wigs and elaborate ensembles to post a touching 15-minute video in which he came out as bisexual.

Confessing that he just wanted “to be honest” with his six million subscribers, Dawson admitted that after struggling with his sexuality for the past year, he felt it was time to come out as bisexual. “I’ve only said that once before, in therapy,” Dawson revealed in the intimate video.

The creator and filmmaker revealed that the process toward accepting his sexuality was a very difficult one for him: “I always wished that I was gay, that I was just 100 percent gay, for so many reasons. Number one, that means I would know who I was. Number two, it would be a lot easier for me to be accepted by people because I wear wigs and dresses on the Internet and I’m feminine, and it would just be so much easier to be like, ‘Yeah, I’m gay.'”

Still, Dawson – who also opened up to his followers about how his confusion growing up led to him isolating himself from others and finding comfort in food – made the decision to come out in the hopes that doing so would help others out there who are struggling with their own sexuality, particularly those who are bisexual themselves.

Since posting his video, Dawson has received a major outpouring of support on Twitter from friends, followers and other YouTubers, all of whom wanted to thank him for his bravery and honesty.

“Love who you want to love, life is short. Nobody’s going to hate you for it,” Dawson said at the end of the video, eventually signing off by saying, “I hope this helped. And from now on, you know everything about me.”

“That feels so good to say!”
