Yep, we’re pretty hyped on our new Sexiest Man Alive cover featuring David Beckham.

But before last night’s big reveal, our editorial director Jess Cagle was asked by Talk Stoop‘s Cat Greenleaf which Sexiest Man Alive cover was his favorite.

“A few years ago we did Matt Damon,” Cagle recalled of the 2007 issue. But it wasn’t exactly easy getting him to agree to the title.

“He said that he would not do it unless he was allowed to write a letter to the magazine about why he shouldn’t be Sexiest Man Alive. But it was great – that was the story, and he loved it, and it was really successful and he looked handsome on the cover. So he was the Sexiest Man Alive but the story was about why he didn’t deserve it.”

For the record, Matt: You totally deserved it – even if Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t agree.

Catch Cagle talking all things sexy on NBC’s Talk Stoop on Saturday, Dec. 12, and on TaxiTV from Nov. 20 to 27. Stay tuned to for more from Beckham, pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday, to read our full interview, and tune in to Lifetime at 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday night for the television special PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive 2015: 30 Years of Sexy.
