You’ve probably heard a lot about the Planned Parenthood controversy that threatens to shut down the the federal government.
But if not, Seth Meyers has you covered.
The Late Night host breaks it down for you in this seven-minute segment titled A Closer Look: Planned Parenthood that amusingly addresses the controversy surrounding the non-profit – while also delivering some sobering truth-bombs.
In a piece that seems reminiscent of something Jon Stewart might have done on The Daily Show, Meyers, 41, questions the facts put forth by the right regarding Planned Parenthood and abortions.
Meyers points out that the controversy stems from “heavily edited tapes secretly recorded by an anti-abortion group of Planned Parenthood officials allegedly discussing the sale of fetal tissue.”
During the Sept. 16 Republican debate, candidate Carly Fiorina discussed a purported undercover Planned Parenthood video that showed aborted fetuses.
“As regards Planned Parenthood, anyone who has watched this videotape – I dare Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama to watch these tapes,” the GOP candidate said at the time. “Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.”
However, no reference to such plans to remove the brain from a fetus has been found. A spokesperson for Planned Parenthood also told PEOPLE that the still image of the fetus shown in one video is actually of a 19-week-old fetus that was stillborn – not aborted.
In his “Closer Look” segment, Meyers shows a clip of an interview NBC News’s Chuck Todd conducted with Fiorina.
When Todd tells her that “there’s no evidence that the scene you describes exists. Are you willing now to concede that you exaggerated that scene?”
“No, not at all,” she replied.
When he asked again that “the footage you describe at best is a reenactment” Fiorina simply responded by saying “Chuck, Chuck, Chuck, Chuck,” – a response Meyers jokingly deemed a “reverse Beetlejuice.”
