During a year where the news cycle was also dominated by “twerking” (the runner-up”), “KimYe,” and “cronut,” “selfie” has taken on all comers to become the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year 2013.

A “selfie” is any picture taken of oneself by oneself, usually for posting on social media. Its first recorded usage was apparently in an Australian internet forum on September 13, 2002. “Sorry about the focus,” the post – detailing a drunken injury – read, “it was a selfie.” And just like that, history was made. Kim Kardashian had probably the most talked-about selfies this year, though Miley Cyrus gave her a run for her money in volume if not risqué-ness. Here’s our list of the most beautiful celebrity selfies. Some other ones that dominated 2013: Geraldo Rivera (who later blamed tequila for his, as most of us have probably done at some point), the newly-shredded Nick Jonas, Kim Zolciak of Real Housewives of Atlanta and her nine-months-pregnant-with-twins selfie, Tom Hanks snapping a pic with Steve Martin at Saturday night’s Governors Awards, and lastly, everything Beyoncé did this year.

Rihanna’s another prolific selfie-snapper: She’s the fourth-most followed person on Instagram, and frequently snaps candid pics of herself backstage.

And we’d be remiss in our duties if we didn’t include the Prince of Instagram, the #2 most-followed person on the platform: Justin Bieber. If you’re struggling with mastering the selfie, here are some tips on how to put your best side forward.
