After living out her relationship woes in the spotlight, Selena Gomez is approaching romance a little more cautiously.

The 23-year-old tells Marie Claire in the magazine’s June 2016 issue that she has “been dating.”

“I’ve been having the best time,” she explains. “But I don’t trust anybody, so dating can only be fun if I know I’m going to have fun.”

Gomez famously dated Justin Bieber on-and-off for several years, last splitting in 2014. She’s since ignited speculation with Charlie Puth (although a source told PEOPLE they’re just friends), and, before that, Samuel Krost.

The singer would rather not be known for who she’s linked to, however. “I would try to promote something that I loved, and the entire interview would be about my personal life,” she tells Marie Claire. “I would leave a room feeling defeated, feeling embarrassed, but I would always make sure to put that smile on my face because I wasn’t going to let them get to me.”

Now, she’s focused on her Revival Tour, which kicked off in Las Vegas last week.

“I finally just wanted to go for it,” she explains of her second solo tour. “I wanted to do things that I knew were going to be me. I don’t want people to look at me as someone who is just this celebrity person.”

And being more than just a famous face means taking the reins of her career. Gomez says, “I had to not be afraid to ask dumb questions, which means I asked a million things about ever single step that I was making.”

The June issue of Marie Claire hits newsstands on May 17.
