Friendly exes Sean Penn and Madonna raised eyebrows after spending time together in recent weeks, but Penn’s daughter Dylan is setting the record straight.

“I think he just really admires her work,” Dylan, whose mother is Penn’s second wife Robin Wright, told Entertainment Tonight on Monday while promoting her first feature film, The Condemned. “They’re just really good friends and [I think] it’s sweet that they can have this relationship.”

Sweet though the relationship may be, the 24-year-old model admits that meeting Madonna, 57, was a little bit strange.

“It was kind of surreal to meet her. Like, my dad’s ex-lover,” Dylan said.

And just like his daughter supports his relationships, Penn, 55, supports Dylan’s career choices: The Oscar winner stepped out with his daughter Sunday to attend the Hollywood premiere of her new movie, The Condemned.

Madonna and Penn had a tumultuous split in 1987 after two years of marriage, but in recent years have expressed their support and respect for one another. In September, Penn was in the front row for his ex-wife’s Rebel Heart concert at Madison Square Garden, where Madonna dedicated her performance of “True Blue” to him.
