Okay, so it’s not the sequel to Titanic, but hardcore film buffs can rejoice with the news that Goonies 2 is an “absolute certainty,” actor Sean Astin insists.

Speaking to MTV News, the actor, 36 (he was 14 when he appeared in the original in 1985), said, “The writing’s on the wall when they’re releasing the Goonies DVD in such numbers.”

Actually, fellow Goonies costar Corey Feldman was the first to let slip that a sequel was in the works, having spilled the beans to MTV News in August.

One hitch: This follow-up will be an animated feature, not live action. But that should hardly matter to those who worship at the Goonies grail.

Feldman, also 36, said one storyline under consideration would have the kids of the original Goonies characters seeking their own adventures.

Astin, who expanded his fan base thanks to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, supports that idea. “I have three children,” he said, “and Corey’s got a kid now. So as we now all have kids who are coming into the age that we were when we made the movie, it’s more likely to me that they’ll figure out how to design a story that will satisfy the older audience in terms of connecting with the original 1985 Goonies, and then create this new thing.”

But that’s apparently only one thought. Adds Astin: “Steven [Spielberg, the producer] and Dick [Donner, the director] and all the powers that be … they really feel like the thing that made the movie strong was that it was about kids, so they really want to make the next movie about kids … the next generation of Goonies. And they’ve had a hard time tackling that.”
