It's a Bust! The Year's Biggest Splits
SCARLETT & RYAN
In November, 2010's Sexiest Man Alive Ryan Reynolds joked about how wife Scarlett Johansson would react to the honor: Yet just a month later, the year would end on a sadder note, as the couple announced their decision to separate. "We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it," they said in a joint statement.
ZAC & VANESSA
"Right off the bat, we had a connection, I think everybody could see it," Vanessa Hudgens told Glamour magazine earlier this year of her and boyfriend Zac Efron's longstanding romance. But that love connection wasn't meant to last: In December, the young couple, who met in 2006 while filming the High School Musical films, split. But the breakup was on good terms, according to a friend of the couple's. "They are 100 percent still good friends," says a source.
COURTENEY & DAVID
It was an odd coupling from the start, but the raven-haired Friends beauty and the goofy Hollywood scion seemed to have found a lasting love equation – at least by Hollywood standards! Married in 1999, the couple welcomed daughter Coco in 2004 after several public miscarriages. Open about stints in therapy and the difficulties of marriage, Cox summed it up blithely in 2006, "We just really like each other." But by 2010, the feelings had waned and the two announced a trial separation. A distraught Arquette later admitted that it was a combination of his immaturity and their declining sex life that led to their union's demise.
SANDRA & JESSE
2010 turned out to be the best of times and the worst of times for Sandra Bullock, who split from husband Jesse James after learning eight days after her triumphant Oscar win that he had cheated on her. Though shocked by the sudden end of her five-year marriage, Bullock found love with a "new man" in her life – adopted son Louis, whom she shared with the world in April on the cover of PEOPLE.
EVA & TONY
Following their 2007 Parisian wedding, Eva Longoria and Tony Parker were inseparable, with the Desperate Housewives beauty cheering courtside at her hubby's San Antonio Spurs games, and the NBA star dutifully shopping with his pint-sized fashionista. But after three years of globetrotting and romance, Longoria filed for divorce in November 2010 amid rumors of infidelity.
BILLY & TISH
After nearly 18 years of marriage, country music's Billy Ray Cyrus and wife Tish rocked Nashville by filing for divorce on Oct. 27. "As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family," the parents of six – who are requesting joint custody of their three minor children, Miley, who turns 18 on Nov. 23; Braison, 16; and Noah, 10 – said in a statement. Whatever happens, a source tells PEOPLE, "Miley is not taking any sides on this."
CHRISTINA & JORDAN
Three years after Christina Aguilera bragged to Ellen DeGeneres that she and music exec Jordan Bratman enjoyed to keep their marriage hot, things had apparently cooled off, with a source telling PEOPLE, "Yes they are separated. Right now they're just trying to figure things out." The couple, who welcomed son Max in 2008, were often criticized for their social life outside parenthood, with Aguilera rebuffing skeptics saying, "If I want to go out and have a mommy-daddy night with my husband, I am more than allowed to do that."
RACHEL & DARREN
Though they'd been engaged for five years, Weisz told Redbook in 2009 that she and fiancé Darren Aronofsky were "completely committed to 'until death do us part.'" That commitment ended when the couple called it quits Nov. 9, after nine years together and a son, Henry. While the romance is over, the couple vow to "remain close friends" and are seeking joint custody of their 4-year-old.
MELISSA & TAMMY
For Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels, nine years of marriage ended in a case of she said, she said. Though Etheridge told Oprah the pair's April 15 split was "as mutual as those things can be," Michaels says she was "blindsided" – and left broke – by their breakup. Things went from bad to worse three months later when the exes went to court over custody of the couple's 3-year-old twins.
BLAKE & PENN
Gossip Girl fans either rejoiced or despaired when news broke in October that the real-life couple ended their three-year romance – just like their onscreen counterparts Serena van der Woodsen and Dan Humphrey. Though they're no longer together, the twosome are clearly still friends, with Lively surprising her ex with cake for his 24th birthday on the set of their show a week after their split.
KELSEY & CAMILLE
Unfortunately for Kelsey Grammer, the third marriage wasn't the charm. His wife of 13 years, ex-Playboy model Camille Donatacci, filed for divorce from the Frasier star July 1, requesting custody of their two children. Days later the 55-year-old actor wrote on his web site that, "certainly, the time will come when I do see another woman" – only to have his rep confirm in August that was dating Kayte Walsh, 29, and had a baby on the way. Sadly, the two suffered a miscarriage.
CHRISTINA & THE-DREAM
"Whatever you think, believe it," Christina Milian Tweeted after incriminating photos surfaced, showing her husband The-Dream cavorting with his assistant in July. But seeing isn't always believing: The pair actually split in February, five months after the new parents had tied the knot. Why the big secret? "I was just simply scared and embarrassed to let everyone know we WERE FAILING and HAVE NOW FAILED!" the rapper-producer wrote on his web site.
KATE & SAM
Working together on 2008's Revolutionary Road, about a crumbling marriage, may have put a strain on Kate Winslet's real-life relationship with director husband Sam Mendes, but their March breakup still stunned friends. "It's really sad; they just grew apart," a source told PEOPLE of the couple's seven-year marriage. "It's tough to be married in this business." But five months after the split, the Oscar winner was ready to move on and go public with a new man, British model Louis Dowler.
JAKE & VIENNA
Love quickly turned into hate – and some knock-down, drag-out verbal sparring – for Bachelor Jake Pavelka, 32, and his once "perfect match," Vienna Girardi, 23. Three months after the final rose ceremony, Pavelka broke up with Girardi over "trust issues." Things only got thornier when the exes met up in a post-Bachelor showdown in July, with Pavelka telling Girardi she "disgusted" him and Girardi countering, "You are a fame whore is what you are."
JOHNATHAN & JANA
Though Johnathan Schaech, 40, called his December 2009 engagement to One Tree Hill star Jana Kramer, 26, "the happiest moment of my life," the union turned out to be short-lived. The couple, who met in 2008 while shooting Prom Night, called it quits in July, after just one month of marriage.
AL & TIPPER
From weathering Tipper's battle with depression and Al's controversial 2000 presidential election defeat to recent sexual abuse allegations, the Gores have always maintained a united front. But after 40 years of marriage, the Washington power couple and parents of four announced their separation in June. The former high school sweethearts said in a statement that it was "a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration."
BRISTOL & LEVI
What a long, strange "Tripp" it's been for Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston. The teen daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin first shocked the world two years ago – by announcing she and her high school sweetheart were expecting during her mother's Republican vice-presidential campaign. Two months after the birth of the couple's son Tripp in March 2009, the pair split, only to reunite this past July. But a month later, they called off their second engagement, with Bristol, 19, telling PEOPLE of her ex, "He's just obsessed with the limelight and I got played."
MEL & OKSANA
Mel Gibson and his girlfriend, Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva, looked happy going public with their romance in April 2009. But following the couple's split a year later, things turned ugly – fast. As Gibson and Grigorieva battled over custody of their infant daughter Lucia, a series of profanity-laced recordings from Gibson to his ex hit the Internet – and along with it, allegations of physical abuse.
GARCELLE & MICHAEL
Don't cross a woman scorned, not when her name is Garcelle Beauvais. The actress sent an angry e-mail titled "Tiger Woods/Jesse James/Mike Nilon" to her husband's Creative Artists Agency colleagues in May, exposing his alleged infidelity. Beauvais wrote, "What do they have in common ... I found out today that MY husband of almost 9 yrs has been having an affair for 5 yrs with some slut in Chicago. I am devastated!!!!" A month after her public accusation, Beauvais officially filed for divorce from Nilon, seeking joint custody of their twin boys.
JOE & DEMI
They'll always have Camp Rock: Two months after Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato (dubbed by Disney fans) went from BFFs to boyfriend-girlfriend, they called it quits in May. "Things didn't work out but we'll remain friends," Tweeted Lovato, who then hit the road with her ex for their joint summer concert tour and to promote their Disney Channel sequel, Camp Rock 2.
PATRICIA & THOMAS
After splitting from husband Thomas Jane in January 2009, Patricia Arquette happily reconciled with the Hung star nine months later, saying, "We're more in love than ever. It's great." But in August, the Medium star filed for divorce a second time, seeking primary custody of their daughter Harlow, 7. A rep for Jane said, "The split is completely amicable and their prime focus is their daughter."
HALLE & GABRIEL
For five years Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, who met on a Versace photo shoot in 2005, looked like a model couple. But by early 2010, the Oscar winner and her beau had quietly split, with Aubry saying of his ex, "She is, and will forever be, one of the most special and beautiful people that I have ever known." Though Berry acknowledged her relationship with Aubry wasn't meant to go the distance, she told Vogue in September that her ex is an "amazing father" and "absolutely the right person" with which to have had her daughter Nahla, 2.
KIM & REGGIE
FRED & ELISABETH
What seemed to be a match made in TV heaven just wasn't meant to be. Seven months after tying the knot in October 2009, Fred Armisen, 43, and Elisabeth Moss, 28, quietly split in May. While the Mad Men star has remained low-key, Armisen, 43, has been stepping out with fellow SNL cast member Abby Elliott, 23 – a relationship that "happened after he and Elisabeth split," a source tells PEOPLE.
BOB & REBECCA
Another Bachelor breakup! Though Bob Guiney didn't find love on season 4 of the reality dating show, he later found a wife in All My Children actress Rebecca Budig when the two co-hosted a Bachelor special in 2003. But after six years of marriage, the couple filed for divorce in April. Budig, who now has a "very special" new man in her life also has the blessing of her soon-to-be-ex, telling PEOPLE, "We really honor the commitment we made to each other."
EVAN & MARILYN
Despite their 19-year age difference, their mutual love for eyeliner brought Marilyn Manson, 41, and Evan Rachel Wood, 23, together in 2006 – days after the shock rocker split with his then-wife, burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese. Two years later, the on-again, off-again pair broke up, only to get in engaged in January 2010, when Manson proposed to Wood onstage in Paris. In August, Wood officially ended their engagement.
MARK-PAUL & LISA
After fourteen years of marriage, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and wife Lisa Ann Russell announced their separation in June. The two actors – who met on the set of Gosselaar's hit TV show Saved by the Bell in 1993 – said they would remain "jointly committed to their children," Michael Charles and Ava Lorenn.
SPENCER & HEIDI
After shocking the world with publicity stunts, a nude pictorial and one total body makeover, it came as no surprise when Heidi Montag filed for divorce from Spencer Pratt after 15 months of marriage. Though The Hills's zaniest couple seemed to love the spotlight as much as each other, Pratt told PEOPLE, "Some say if you can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen. Well, Heidi couldn't handle King Spencer's fame so she got out of the marriage." Still, you never know what they could cook up next ...
JENNIFER & JAMIE
Two months after breaking off her engagement to Scottish actor Ross McCall, Jennifer Love Hewitt found love – and laughs – with her Ghost Whisperer costar Jamie Kennedy. Though the pair often gushed about each other, they quietly ended their year-long romance in March – ironically, just as Hewitt's new advice book on dating and relationships, The Day I Shot Cupid, hit bookstores.
CHERYL & PAUL
Life imitated art for Cheryl Hines: First she split from Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm, then she and her real-life producer husband Paul Young called it quits after nearly eight years of marriage on July 20. The friendly exes have vowed to "remain extremely close friends" as they continue to raise 6-year-old daughter Catherine Rose together.
CHARLIZE & STUART
"I didn't do a church wedding or anything, but we're married. We're husband and wife," Stuart Townsend told PEOPLE in 2007 of his commitment to then-girlfriend Charlize Theron. And though the Oscar-winning actress always maintained that marriage is "not my thing," she once told Oprah that Townsend was "the best thing that's ever happened to me." But after nine years together, the couple quietly went their separate ways in 2010, with Theron being briefly linked to her North Country costar and pal Jeremy Renner.
