Scarlett Johansson had a weird year. Not like, Crispin Glover weird, but weird by Hollywood standards. From bizarre memes to out-of-nowhere marriage plans, there were a number of things we just didn’t see coming in ScarJo’s world. (At least five things, to be exact.)

On the occasion of Johansson’s 29th birthday on Friday, we’d like to take a closer look at some of her more head-scratching moments of 2013.

The infamous photo of Scarlett Johansson tripping on the set of Under the Skin that started a meme

The incident happened last year, but the photograph of it didn’t blow up until this year. Johansson was snapped falling down while filming Under the Skin in Glasgow, Scotland. The image was submitted to a subReddit dedicated to Photoshopping things, and a meme was born. Definitely not the sort of thing you’d expect to develop around an impossibly-beautiful Hollywood actress, but maybe that’s the point.

Scarlett Johansson and her fiancamp#233; Romain Dauriac

It wasn’t so much that Johansson got engaged to French beau Romain Dauriac, it was more that it was a sudden and slightly unexpected move from Johansson, who’d previously been married to Ryan Reynolds and linked to other high-profile men like Sean Penn, Jared Leto, and Josh Hartnett. Although Dauriac is an artistic type by all accounts, he is not a household name (neither here nor in France).

In Spike Jonze’s new film, Her, Johansson voices an operating system named “Samantha,” and actor Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with her/it. Johansson recently won the Best Actress prize at the Rome Film Festival for the role, which some people are speculating may lead to an historic Oscar nomination. Keep in mind the Academy has never nominated a voiceover role before. Somewhere Siri is seething with jealousy.

That’s all there is to it. Kinda freaky, right?

Yeah, this isn’t that weird. It’s just kind of unexpectedly awesome. Johansson and Tariq (of The Roots) make a really good team, even if they did lose out to the weirdly-appropriate pairing of Jimmy Fallon and Drake.
