SWISS MISS

Usually picture-perfect at award shows, presenter Uma Thurman made a huge fashion misstep at the 2004 Oscars in her billowing dress, which made her look more like the Swiss storybook character Heidi than a sexy movie star.

Best Actress nominee Keaton (for Something's Gotta Give) won the award in the same category for 1977's Annie Hall. Maybe she thought that recycling her menswear-inspired look from the film would bring her good luck at the 2004 Oscars, but it's too bad Keaton's covering up the fabulous figure she showcased in her nominated role.

SHORT CHANGED

These days, Demi Moore dresses in Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, but in 1989, she designed her own look for the Oscars. Since her design included bicycle shorts, a bustier and metallic accents, we say: Stick with the pros.

CHER & CHER ALIKE

Saying "Cher" and "over-the-top" in the same sentence is redundant, as evidenced by her collection of flamboyant gowns (from left): 1974's floral two-piece, 1988's Bob Mackie, and 1998's crystal-encrusted creation.

GWYN GOES GOTH

Credit: F. Barrett/globe

Who are you, and what have you done with the always glamorous, elegant Gwyneth Paltrow? That's what we wondered when we saw Paltrow in this unflattering, figure-flattening goth getup in 2002.

TWO OF A KIND

Even having then-boyfriend Brad Pitt on her arm couldn't distract from Juliette Lewis's cornrows and silly '20s frock at the 1992 Oscars. And, we've got to ask: What's with the tie, Brad?

SUITED UP

Credit: Lisa Rose/Globe; Roy Fitz/ IPOL

Celine Dion's never been subtle on the red carpet, but the winter-white ensemble she wore in 1999 just went too far. Don't adjust your screen – that suit is actually on backwards, and she wore the hat that way on purpose.

RAINBOW BRIGHT

Country star Faith Hill has three young daughters – maybe she was dressing for them in the sugar-coated gown she wore to the Oscars in 2002? Instead of the red carpet, she belonged somewhere over the rainbow.

CAN-CAN'T DRESS

Credit: Geena Davis

Geena Davis proved her acting chops in Thelma amp Louise, which earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination in 1992. Her fashion skills were another story, however: The black-and-white number she wore to the ceremony showed off her long legs, but still looked more silly than sexy.

BOLD BASINGER

Some people leave their lipstick at home; others forget their keys. At the 1990 Oscars, Kim Basinger arrived without part of her dress. But while part of the top half was left out, the bottom certainly packed a wallop. What was she hiding in there?

GOLD STAR

Credit: M. Ferguson/globe

Going for the gold took on new meaning in 1993, when Best Actress Oscar nominee Susan Sarandon (for Lorenzo's Oil) walked the red carpet in this glowing number. Though gold is often a flattering shade for redheads, head-to-toe lame is just too much – even more so with her towering updo.

TSK TSK, TYRA

Even stunning Victoria's Secret model Tyra Banks has her off days. The sometime-actress (who has appeared in films such as 2000's Love amp Basketball and Coyote Ugly) must have had one when selecting her gown for the 2000 Academy Awards. Even a gorgeous supermodel can't make this sea of lavender tulle work.

SINGING THE BLUES

Credit: P. Roach/globe

Sure, 1983 wasn't the best year for fashion, but that's no excuse for the prom-gown look Daryl Hannah wore to the Academy Awards. The white heels and gloves just make matters worse. Hannah meant to make a splash but missed the boat entirely.

BLACKOUT

Credit: Phil Raoch/IPOL/GLOBE

Now Helena Bonham Carter is a veteran of countless red carpet events, but in 1987, she was still clueless. Too much tulle, too-teased hair, the eyebrows, the shoes, the polka dots – this look is just wrong.

VELVETEEN HABIT

Credit: Ron Galella

Rocker and sometime-actor Jon Bon Jovi was selling out stadiums when he attended the 1991 Academy Awards (where he was up for his song "Blaze of Glory," from 1990's Young Guns II) – but someone should have told him to tone down the glam look and big hair for the red carpet.

WHOA, WHOOPI

Credit: celebrity photo/wireimage

Was Whoopi Goldberg bummed about not hosting the Oscars in 1993? Perhaps that's why the Academy Award winner (as Best Supporting Actress in 1990's Ghost) went for this loud, unflattering gown at the ceremony that year. All was forgiven in 1994, when Goldberg played emcee on Hollywood's big night.
