115 community gardens in New York, by two environmental groups — and a $250,000 donation from Bette Midler — after Mayor Rudy Giuliani threatened to sell the city spaces to the highest bidders (read: developers). Pricetag of the salvation effort: $4.2 million. The Trust for Public Land and other agencies will pick up the tab.
