The Olympic figure skater tells PEOPLE about the first time she met her fianceé, the proposal details, and the ring!
Sasha Cohen is smitten!
The Olympic figure skater shared a special announcement on Monday – her engagement to boyfriend Tom May. Having first met May, a hedge fund manager, at a Harvard Business School party last year, the 2006 silver medalist says that it actually wasn’t love at first sight.
“Our first date was great, but I didn’t know he was the one until our fourth or fifth date, and then I knew that I had found something incredibly special,” Cohen, 30, tells PEOPLE. “From then on, I absolutely knew that this was the man I wanted to spend my life with and things moved quickly.”
So quickly, in fact, that May decided to propose during their two-month travel expedition.
While taking a quiet walk along a secluded beach in Provincetown, Massachusetts, May decided to pop the question right then and there, with the sun setting in the background.
“I was absolutely speechless and said of course,” Cohen says.
Cohen took to Instagram to share a picture of the special moment – oh, and that ring!
“I love the simplicity and the color of rose gold, but mainly, I just love what it symbolizes,” the skater says.
Though the pair have not yet started thinking about wedding plans, they know that won’t be able to get enough of one another.
“Basically, no matter how much time I spend with Tom, it’s never enough,” says Cohen. “Even when we spend a long day driving in traffic together, it ends up being an amazing day. I think when you find someone that makes the most ordinary moments amazing, you never let them go.”
