The hills are alive with the sounds of “Goooooaaal!”

On Wednesday, Team Chile played against defending World Cup champions, Spain, to prove their futbol prowess. Watching in his home country, Santiago resident Manuel Vésquez had a hunch that something magical would happen when Chilean footballer Alexis Sanchez stepped up for his free-kick. Hoping for a big reaction, Vésquez went outside and began to film his silent city.

Good thing he followed that gut instinct. Moments after Vésquez hit record, Sanchez’s free kick connected with teammate Charles Aranguiz, who tapped the ball into the back of the net for Chile’s second goal of the game. The citizens of Santiago reacted by enveloping their metropolis in a tidal wave of celebratory sounds, which Vésquez captured on film.

Chile’s capital had even more to cheer about later in the day. Their team went on to defeat Spain 2-0 and will proceed to their next World Cup match.
