Santana's Big Night

Carlos Santana and Garth Brooks were the big winners at last night’s 27th annual American Music Awards in Los Angeles. Santana’s comeback CD “Supernatural” was named best pop/rock album (besting the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears, though Spears was named favorite new pop/rock artist over Kid Rock and Jennifer Lopez). Garth collected three prizes: male country artist, country album for “Double Live” and a special Artist of the Decade accolade. “I’m not sure that people don’t need a breather from Garth,” he said backstage afterward. Still referring to himself in the third person, Garth said, “You look at your three children, and really, that’s your calling.” Santana, 52, received a standing ovation after accepting his award. After thanking his family, the guitarist brought his co-producer, Clive Davis, onstage to share the honor. Davis has been in a high-stakes power struggle over his future with the company that owns Arista Records.
