Santana: Favorite Son

Add another honor to the eight Grammys Carlos Santana won last week. The veteran rock guitarist’s Mexican birthplace is planning to build a Santana town square, erect a Santana statue and name a street after him, town officials of Autlan de Navarro (about 90 miles southeast of the Jalisco state capital of Guadalajara), announced on Monday. Besides the statue of Santana, the square in Autlan (pop. 80,000) will also feature figures of other local musicians — including the 52-year-old rocker’s father, Jose, who played the violin in a mariachi band. Autlan spokesman Marco Rodriguez told Reuters that Carlos Santana Plaza is set to be completed in the latter half of this year — and that city fathers hope Santana himself will be there.
