Sam Smith doesn’t just have new ink – he has new reminders of what matters to him.
The British singer-songwriter, 23, shared closeups of his new designs via Instagram on Tuesday. Although his finger tattoos both have simple red lines and the arm tattoos feature the same cursive writing, Smith’s tight shots make it clear that the designs are quite unique.
In addition to showing off the tattoos, Smith provided all the details on what inspired him to take a trip to the parlor. Read on to find out what each of the marks mean.
“First one – the equality sign on my wedding finger,” wrote Smith, who has been candid about growing up gay and being bullied. “This ones pretty self explanatory. It shows my views on gay marriage and equality for all x.”
The second set of double red lines is on Smith’s right hand. You could say it’s a throwback of sorts. As Smith explained, the tattoo is “inspired by one of the oldest tattoos ever found on a mummified body that was found buried alone in the ice.”
Smith took a literal route with his arm ink. “Third – This is what I promise to be in my music,” he wrote of the design reading “Honesty.” “It’s what I live by. In the words of @mariamena_official ‘Honesty is my God.'”
As for the fourth work of body art, Smith chose to have “Alone” place on his left arm. “And lastly – this is just me being a melancholy twat haha,” penned the single star. “I do see it as a small positive thou… No longer lonely… Just alone… Which is ok x thought I’d share these with you because I love them.”
This isn’t the soulful crooner’s first time toughing it out for the needle – in April, he had an artist put a small anchor on his forearm. The symbol is an ode to his fans, whom he affectionately calls “little sailors.”
