Ryan Reynolds easily remembers the best reaction he got after being named Sexiest Man Alive in 2010.

“Probably my brother, who asked if the selection committee is aware that I have a brother,” the actor tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

So who gave him the hardest time? “Everyone from my 5th grade teacher to the FedEx guy dropping a package off at my house,” he adds.

Now married to actress Blake Lively and father to their young daughter, James, Reynolds admits being Sexiest Man Alive has made it easier for him to take a compliment, but “within reason,” he says. “Let’s not get carried away.

So how many other SMAs has he met? “It’s like Fight Club,” he says. “But with expertly lit photography, casually tossed hair and twice-filtered mineral waters made from the tears of newborn giraffes. We don’t talk about it.”

His advice for this year’s winner is simple: “People love it when you carry a copy of the issue with you everywhere you go for five straight years without interruption,” Reynolds, 39, says. “Even for the birth of your daughter.”
