The actor posted $50,000 bond after his Saturday morning arrest on assault and weapons charges
Actor Ryan O’Neal was arrested in his Malibu home on assault and firearms charges after a fight with his 42-year-old son Griffin, police said Sunday.
Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics went to his house at 12:30 a.m. Saturday responding to a call about a suspected battery, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Benedict.
“Deputies determined that Mr. Griffin O’Neal was assaulted by his father during a family dispute,” said Benedict.
The elder O’Neal, 65, was booked at the Malibu-Lost Hills sheriff’s station on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm, said Benedict. O’Neal was released at 5:30 a.m. Saturday after posting $50,000 bond. The arrest was first reported by TMZ.com.
It was unclear what started the fight, but O’Neal’s manager, Neil Hassman, released a statement Monday, claiming that the actor was defending himself after his son began “wildly swinging a fireplace poker.”
“It is unfortunate that what should have been an internal family disagreement was escalated to the point that Ryan felt he had to defend himself from Griffin’s aggressive, extremely menacing physical behavior,” the statement released to Extra reads.
According to Hassman, Griffin O’Neal’s pregnant girlfriend was slightly injured during the incident. He says her injuries were caused by the younger O’Neal and that she was treated at a hospital and released.
Griffin O’Neal could not be reached for comment.
The fight came just a day after the family received good news: On Friday, actress Farrah Fawcett, who was the longtime girlfriend of Ryan O’Neal and the mother of Griffin’s half-brother Redmond, announced she was cancer free after a fight with anal cancer.
